What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is an injectable cosmetic dermal filler that can be used to treat signs of aging on facial skin and restore facial volume lost due to aging or illness. Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) which is a synthetic, biocompatible substance that is used for multiple medical applications aside from dermal injections. Sculptra stimulates collagen production in patients with a healthy immune system, allowing the tissue to volumize gradually, making it beneficial in the treatment of deep lines, creases, and folds to give a more youthful appearance.

How long does Sculptra last?

The lasting effects of Sculptra depend on the treatment area, a patient’s age, and personal body composition. Most patients can expect to experience results for about two years if they follow a full series of initial treatment sessions. However, it is important to note that many patients may see results for a shorter or longer period. Typically, patients will need one maintenance treatment session per year to maintain their results. Once collagen buildup has occurred, the biodegradable PLLA is absorbed into the patient’s body, leaving the patient’s natural collagen support structure.

What is Sculptra good for?

Commonly used as a dermal filler, Sculptra may be used for multiple applications in the treatment of a hollowed facial appearance, correcting facial volume loss, and the reduction of lines and wrinkles. The most common treatment areas are:

• The “smile lines” (Nasolabial folds) which extend from a patient’s nose to the corners of their mouth
• Marionette lines which extend vertically from the corners of a patient’s mouth to their chin
• Skin depressions or hollowed facial areas such as sunken cheeks
• Wrinkles in the chin area

It’s not recommended that Sculptra is to be used in lip or eye area treatments.

Sculptra may also be used in treatments in other parts of the body, not just the face. These off-label areas include:

• Butt lifts and butt augmentation
• Hip augmentation
• Cellulite treatment
• Elbow, knee, and chest wrinkle treatments

Sculptra is also known to be a popular choice in the creation of more muscle definition and mass in the pectorals, biceps, triceps, thighs, and glutes.

What is the recovery time?

There is no downtime after a Sculptra treatment. Most patients return to work and regular daily activities immediately, which makes it a convenient treatment to add to your day. It is safe to resume wearing makeup a few hours following treatment, with your doctor’s agreement.

To achieve the best results, it is recommended that patients:

• Apply a cold pack wrapped in a towel or face cloth to the treatment area for a few minutes at a time. This should be repeated for the first 24 hours to reduce any swelling at the treatment area.
• Massage 5/5/5. That is to massage the treatment area 5 times a day, for 5 minutes a day, for 5 days.
• Avoid excessive sunlight or UV lamp exposure until any swelling or redness has resolved.

It is common and expected to not notice much of a difference immediately after treatment. This is because the water carrier in Sculptra may provide a filling effect, but this water is absorbed into the body within a few days of treatment. Patients report progressive visible results within a few weeks of each treatment session and may take up to 3 to 5 months to see a noticeable difference.
